I thought your letter was timeless, and that your view of the land as a spiritual resource was well before its time. In 1987 public lands to most people were little more than a nice place to visit occasionally, I went camping as a kid and thought little of what happened to the campgrounds when we left, and never really appreciated the amount of work required to keep them open. As I have gotten older and the conservation movement has gained momentum it is amazing how many people do truly care about the land and want to preserve it for future generations....that is due in large part to people like you who saw the value of the land and helped the rest of us see it for the magnificent thing it is.
As you near retirement, you should know that letters like this did make a difference in the lives of your employees (and few new employees too!), you gave them ownership of not only problems but the solutions as well, that is a very powerful thing. Your call for action is still needed today, and your voice will be greatly missed.

Thanks Floyd. Where is the presentation posted? I looked a couple of places but didn't find it.

Thanks Floyd! I was disappointed that Smokey didn't go up this year; they just inflated him-- he didn't take flight. What an experience to be able to actually go up!! Was that out here in Albuquerque?

Just tried to open the links and they do work. You may be referring to the the way the Forest Service has set up security on Internet Explorer -- it almost always makes you approve of the website before downloading, which is If you say "yes" to the pop up message, the download occurs without a hitch and the document opens. (I think you can use the check box in the lower left corner of this message to turn this feature off.)

If there's another problem with the downloads not related to this MSIE security setting, let me know.

Thanks Floyd,

We start our bike trip a week from Sunday. I am really looking forward to it.

Yes, I think this would be appropriate for a discussion at Bastrop. The communications committee has been talking about researching forum type applications. Perhaps this is an option. I think Sergio wanted to have a recommendation for the board at Bastrop. So we may be in touch before then to learn more.

Hi Floyd, nice to hear from you! I've also been wondering about how to share some of our learning and work on the Colville, and look forward to spending more time with REC LINK when I get back in mid-August. I'm not sure if having a variety of different groups focusing on the various aspects of sustainable rec is the way to go for document management, or if we could set up the Library as a well-organized repository of documents/information. Seems to me that we should aim to somehow allow easy access to documents, but also provide a venue for specific discussion topics... Mixing the two in the same place could get unruly, but we also don't want to make people hunt around for what they need.

Our first big product out here is the Recreation and Tourism Strategy for NE Washington, which I wrote! I'll email it along to you in the event that you'd like to take a gander. See you soon!
