The Androscoggin Ranger District of the White Mountain National Forest will soon be advertising a GS-0462-7/8 Snow Ranger/Avalanche Specialist-Backcountry/Wilderness Program Manager position. This position has varied and very different responsibilities depending on the season. From late May until the snow begins to fly again in the late fall, the incumbent serves as the lead for three wilderness areas and supervises a crew of Backcountry/Wilderness Rangers in the performance of duties related to dispersed recreation and wilderness management on the District. From December until the end of May, the incumbent works as part of the Mount Washington Avalanche Center, a motivated and effective Snow Ranger team that issues daily avalanche advisories, performs Search and Rescue missions for the Forest Service as Lead Agency in command, and increases visitor knowledge through avalanche education programs of varying media. Please see the attached Outreach Notice for specific position duties.
This was my first permanent position with the agency and a strong contender for the best job in the universe! Wilderness duties include managing three units including the smallest area designated by the Wilderness Act of 1964 (Great Gulf) and the only USFS-managed unit in Maine (Caribou-Speckled Mountain). It requires a special skill set due to 50% of the duties being associated with avalanche forecasting and SAR management but for the right candidate this position combines the best of both worlds.
